ManyChat Not Working on Instagram? 9 Fixes in Order

ManyChat not working on Instagram? Nine fixes in order: account type, messages toggle, revoked permissions, keywords, post type, 24-hour window, outages.

9 min read

It's 9:40 pm. Your reel went up an hour ago, 63 people have commented "GUIDE", and your phone hasn't buzzed once. You open ManyChat, the automation says Live, you comment GUIDE from your own account to test it, and still nothing arrives.

That is the moment most people type manychat not working on instagram into a search bar. The frustrating part is that the fix is almost never inside the flow you built. It's one of nine things around it: the account type, a toggle buried in Instagram's settings, a permission that died when you changed a password, a keyword that doesn't quite match, or Meta having a bad night.

Here they are in the order that catches the most cases with the least effort, each pointing at ManyChat's own help pages or Meta's developer docs so you can check the wording yourself.

1. Is the account personal or professional?

Instagram only lets third-party tools read comments and send DMs for professional accounts. ManyChat's connection guide says it plainly: "Personal accounts can't be used to connect to Manychat."

One wrinkle from ManyChat's troubleshooting steps: it asks for a Creator account up to 500k followers and a Business account above that, so if you're past that line on a Creator account, switching to Business is ManyChat's first instruction.

In the Instagram app, open Settings and activity, then Account type and tools. If it offers to switch you to a professional account, you're on a personal one. Switch, then reconnect ManyChat.

Also, Meta's webhook docs say the professional account that owns the post "must be public to receive notifications for comments." A private professional account will connect, but comment triggers won't fire.

2. Which Facebook Page is it tied to, and are you a full admin?

ManyChat offers three ways to connect Instagram: via Meta, via Instagram directly, and via Meta Business Suite. The third needs your account linked to a Facebook Page, and ManyChat notes you "must be an Admin with Full Control of the Facebook Page" or the account won't appear in the picker.

A missing account is usually a role problem, not a bug: get Full Control from whoever owns the Page, or use "Connect via Instagram," which skips the Page entirely.

If the Connect button shows "Request Sent" instead, that account is already linked to another ManyChat workspace, often a former agency or employee, and ManyChat's can't-connect guide says they have to transfer ownership first.

One trap for older setups: ManyChat warns that assigning a new Facebook Page to an Instagram account connected before June 14, 2024 means automations "will stop working" until support reconnects it.

3. Flip "Allow access to messages" in the Instagram app

This one toggle explains most "connected but silent" cases: the account connects, the automation publishes, and nothing sends because Instagram hasn't been told to let tools into your inbox.

ManyChat's troubleshooting page gives the path: open your professional account, go to Settings and activity, then Messages and story replies, then Message controls, then Connected tools, and toggle Allow access to messages on. Meta's own getting-started doc for Instagram messaging lists the same setting as a requirement.

Then click Refresh permissions under ManyChat's Help button and test with a comment from a different account, not your own.

4. Did a password change quietly revoke the permissions?

If everything ran for weeks and then died on one day, think about what happened that day. A changed Instagram or Facebook password is the usual culprit; so is a teammate removing ManyChat from Facebook's Business Integrations.

Meta's Graph API error table has a subcode for exactly this, 460 "Password Changed," and the prescribed fix is logging in to the app again. ManyChat gets that error and your automations stop with no alarm in the flow builder.

ManyChat's fix is on its Refresh permissions page: "If you recently changed your Instagram or Facebook password, log out of both Manychat and your Instagram/Facebook account, then log back in and use Refresh Permissions again." If that fails, repeat it in an incognito window, which rules out a cached login.

The same page says Refresh permissions also fixes the comments trigger not showing your recent posts in the picker. That's a stale permission, not a missing post.

5. Does the comment contain the exact word you listed?

In the Post and Reel Comments trigger you choose between "Include certain words" (only comments with those words trigger the DM), "Exclude certain words," or "Any comment." Most failures here are humans being human: you asked for LINK and they wrote "link pls?", or "🔗", or "yes!!", or "want this."

ManyChat's keyword documentation says keywords are not case-sensitive, so LINK, link and Link all count. A different word, an emoji instead of the word, or a typo doesn't. Add the variants you actually see (LINK, LINKS, LINK PLEASE), or switch that post to "Any comment" if the whole post is a giveaway.

Then there's the rule that fools almost every self-tester. ManyChat's comments trigger page states that the trigger "only activates for the first comment a user leaves under a post or reel. If the same user comments again using the same keyword, the automation won't run a second time," and calls it a limit on Instagram's side. If you've been commenting LINK repeatedly from one test account, the first comment used up that turn. Test from a fresh account each time.

Also check for competing triggers: ManyChat says that when two triggers cover all posts without keywords, the oldest one always wins, so a forgotten "any comment" automation can swallow every comment first.

6. Is it a post, a reel, a story or an ad?

The comments trigger covers posts and reels you published, and ManyChat says boosted posts have been supported since June 11, 2024. But it has edges:

  • A post created only in Ads Manager that isn't on your grid won't show in the post picker, so it can't use the comments trigger. For those, ManyChat has a separate User clicks an Instagram Ad trigger, which works only with ads built in Ads Manager and not with boosted posts.
  • Story replies are a different trigger entirely (Story Reply), because a story reply is already a DM, not a comment.
  • Collab posts work if the original poster's account is the one connected to ManyChat. Remixes only work if you own both the original and the remix.
  • Live comments use their own Live Comments trigger, and Meta's docs say private replies to Live comments can only be sent during the broadcast.

If reels work and your ad doesn't, nothing is broken; it's the wrong trigger for that surface.

7. The public-reply rules

ManyChat treats the public reply as optional: during setup you can add several variations and it rotates them. But the same page is blunt about why DMs appear to die on busy posts. To avoid replies being "flagged as spam by Instagram's automated systems," it tells you to change your wording periodically, use different replies for different comments, and avoid very short or emoji-only replies.

So if your public reply is a lone 🔥 posted 400 times a day, expect trouble. Write three or four full-sentence variations ("Sent you the link in your DMs, Priya, check your requests folder if it's not in your inbox") and let them rotate.

For the deeper reasoning on pairing a public reply with the DM, the earlier post on an Instagram auto DM not sending after a comment walks through it.

8. The 24-hour window and the one-private-reply limit

Two Meta rules sit underneath every comment-to-DM tool, and both look like "ManyChat is broken" when you hit them.

First, the private reply. Meta's private replies doc says "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented," and it has to go within 7 days of the comment. That one message is your DM. If it failed for any of the reasons above, you don't get a second shot at that comment; the person has to comment on a different post, or message you first.

Second, the window. Meta's messaging API doc gives your app 24 hours to respond to any message a user sends you. ManyChat's trigger page adds the part people miss: the private reply itself "does not open the 24-hour messaging window." It opens only when the person replies, or taps a button or quick reply. An "Open website" button doesn't count. So if the first DM lands but the follow-up never sends, the window never opened and ManyChat is correctly refusing.

The fix: put a quick reply or button in the first DM and make the link the second step; follow-ups can only go out after that tap.

High-volume accounts also bump into Meta's rate limit: 750 private replies per hour per Instagram account for comments on posts and reels.

9. Is Meta down?

Sometimes you've done everything right and the pipes are broken. Before you rebuild anything, open Meta's status page for the Instagram Platform and ManyChat's own status page. If either shows an incident, stop touching settings; you'll only have more to undo later.

Outages look like rung 4 (sudden, total, same day), so check here before revoking and re-granting permissions.

When the fix is a simpler tool

Rungs 1, 3, 4, 8 and 9 are Instagram's rules, and no tool can route around them. Any comment-to-DM app needs a professional account, the messages toggle, live permissions, and respect for the 24-hour window.

Rungs 2, 5, 6 and 7 are a different story. A flow builder with three connection methods, a dozen trigger types and priority rules between automations gives you a dozen places to be wrong. If you only ever want one thing to happen (someone comments a word and gets a DM with their name, your link and an email ask), a tool built for just that has fewer rungs to fall off.

That's the gap DMComments sits in: Instagram comment-to-DM only, DM within seconds, email collected inside the conversation, every lead saved to a CRM you own, and AI follow-ups for people who go quiet. It's free to start with no card, and paid plans are priced by how many Instagram accounts you connect rather than by contacts, so a busy post doesn't push you into a higher tier.

If ManyChat is doing a lot more for you than comment-to-DM, keep it and work the ladder. If the ladder is the only reason you open it, that's your sign.

Questions people ask

Why does ManyChat send the DM to other people but not when I test from my own account?
ManyChat's comments trigger only fires on the first comment a person leaves under a given post or reel, and it says this is an Instagram-side limit. If you have commented your keyword several times from the same test account, the first one used up that turn. Test from a fresh account on each attempt, or comment on a different post.
Do I need a Facebook Page to run ManyChat on Instagram?
Not anymore: the Connect via Instagram option works without a Page or a Meta Business account. The Meta Business Suite method does need a linked Page, and you must be an Admin with Full Control or the account will not appear in the picker. Accounts connected before June 14, 2024 also stop working if you swap the linked Page.
How long after someone comments can the DM still go out?
Meta's private replies documentation allows one message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment being created. That single message is your automated DM, so if it fails you cannot retry on the same comment. Any follow-up after that depends on the person replying or tapping a button, which opens the 24-hour messaging window.
Will changing my Instagram password break ManyChat?
Often, yes, because Meta invalidates the access token when a password changes and ManyChat's automations stop with no alarm in the flow builder. ManyChat's fix is to log out of ManyChat and of Instagram or Facebook, log back in, and click Refresh permissions under the Help button. If that fails, repeat it in an incognito window.
Why does the first DM arrive but the follow-up never sends?
The private reply to a comment does not open Meta's 24-hour messaging window, so ManyChat blocks any further automated message. The window opens only when the person replies or taps a quick reply or regular button, and an Open website button does not count. Put a button in the first DM and send the link as the second step.
