ManyChat Instagram DM Automation Not Working? Trigger Checks
ManyChat Instagram DM automation not working on one post? Check the comment trigger: post scope, keyword, follow gate, one reply per comment, 5-minute...
It's 9:40 pm. A friend texts you a screenshot: she commented GUIDE on your carousel 20 minutes ago and her DMs are empty. You open ManyChat. The automation says Live. Runs today: 0.
Most of the time this isn't an outage and it isn't permissions. It's the comment trigger itself: the post it's pointed at, the exact word it's listening for, or one of the rules Meta puts on private replies that nobody mentioned during setup. If you're looking at a ManyChat Instagram DM automation not working on one post while the account otherwise looks fine, run this list before you touch anything in Instagram's settings.
If nothing fires on any post and the account looks disconnected, that's a different problem; the broader auto-DM troubleshooting post covers account type, permissions and outages.
ManyChat Instagram DM automation not working: match the symptom to a setting
Find the row that matches what you're seeing, then jump to that numbered check below.
| What you see | Setting to check | Check |
|---|---|---|
| No public reply, no DM, Runs stays at 0 | The trigger is pointed at a different post, or a "Next post" trigger already spent itself | 1 |
| Works on last week's reel, not the new one | "Specific post or reel" is selected | 1 |
| Works for your test account, fails for most commenters | Keyword typed differently, exclude list, or the follow gate | 2, 4 |
| Commenter says "I got a DM but no link" | Follow gate is on and they don't follow you | 4 |
| Someone commented twice and got nothing the second time | First-comment-only rule, one private reply per comment | 5 |
| Comments on an ad or a story reply do nothing | Wrong trigger type for that surface | 3 |
| First DM arrives, email ask or follow-up never does | The person hasn't tapped a button or replied, so the 24-hour window never opened | 6 |
| Public reply posts, DM never shows up | "Send as a Private Reply" isn't selected, or the DM is sitting in message requests | 7, 8 |
| DMs deliver, public replies stopped | Public reply toggle, or ManyChat's high-volume protection | 8 |
What each check means, and what to click
1. Which post the trigger is actually watching
Open the automation, click the trigger (ManyChat calls it "User comments on your Post or Reel"), and look at the first panel. ManyChat's trigger documentation gives three options:
- Specific post or reel: only comments under that one post count.
- All posts or reels: any post on the account.
- Next post or reel: only the next post you publish after setting the automation live.
"Next post" is where most of the 9:40 pm screenshots come from. It waits for a post that doesn't exist yet, so if you built the automation after the reel went up, it's watching the wrong thing. ManyChat's Quick Automation guide also notes you can run only one "next post" automation at a time, and once it catches a post it's used up. If you want it on the post that's live right now, switch to "Specific post or reel" and pick it from the post picker.
Two more scope rules hide in the same doc. If you have more than one trigger set to all posts with no keyword, the oldest trigger wins every time. And on collab posts, the automation runs only if the account that originally published the post is the one connected to ManyChat; remixes need you to own both the original and the remix.
In one ManyChat community thread, the reply that finally worked for a creator whose DMs reached only one or two commenters was to point the same automation at a different post.
2. The keyword, letter for letter
Click into the keyword step. You get "include certain words", "exclude certain words", or "any comment".
- Compare the word in the trigger with the word in your caption. "Guide" in the caption and "GUIDES" in the trigger is a miss. Keep it to one plain word with no punctuation.
- Check the exclude list. A word on it blocks the whole comment, even if the include word is there too.
- ManyChat's keyword documentation says its matching isn't case-sensitive, and community replies say the same for comments. Still test LINK, Link and link from a second account, because the comment trigger page doesn't spell out how it treats "link!!" or "link pls", and the only cheap way to know is to try.
- An emoji-only comment can't match a word. If your caption says "comment the fire emoji," use "any comment" instead.
- If two keyword triggers share a word, each keyword fires its own automation, so the commenter can get the wrong DM.
3. Reels, ads, story replies and lives are four different triggers
The post-or-reel trigger covers reels and feed posts. It also covers boosted posts, which ManyChat added on June 11, 2024. It does not cover an ad created only in Ads Manager that never appears on your grid: that post won't show in the picker. Click-to-message ads use a separate "User clicks an Instagram Ad" trigger, and that one doesn't work with boosted posts.
A story reply is a DM, not a comment. It needs the "User replies to your Story" trigger, which ManyChat's story reply page says fires only for direct replies or reactions, not story likes or comments.
Live comments use "User comments on your Live", which runs only while the broadcast is active. That matches the rule on Meta's side: private replies to Live comments can only be sent during the broadcast.
4. The follow gate
In the Quick Automation setup there's an optional step, "Ask users to follow you before receiving the link." ManyChat's Quick Automation guide explains that if the commenter doesn't follow you, they get a DM asking them to follow before the link is sent. That's the "I got a DM but no link" report. Either turn the gate off or make the first DM say plainly that following unlocks the link.
The same guide lists what can't be sent when the Opening DM is disabled: the follow request, the email ask, and the follow-up reminder. Those three all depend on the person tapping a button first, which is check 6.
5. One comment, one private reply, seven days
Meta's rules for private replies are short. Meta's developer documentation says only one message can be sent to the commenter, it must go out within 7 days of the comment, and follow-up messages can only be sent if the recipient responds, within 24 hours of that response.
ManyChat adds its own version on top: the trigger runs only for the first comment a person leaves on a post. A second comment with the same keyword does nothing, and ManyChat says this applies to every tool on Instagram's API. So "I commented again and nothing happened" is expected, and so is your own test account going quiet after its first comment on a post.
Comments older than 7 days when you set the automation live get no DM either.
6. The person has to reply before anything else sends
The private reply doesn't open the 24-hour messaging window. ManyChat's trigger doc is explicit: the window opens only after the person interacts with the message, by replying, tapping a button or tapping a Quick Reply. An "Open website" button doesn't count. If they only tap the link, the window never opens and the email ask and follow-up stay queued.
So the first DM has to invite a tap or a one-word answer. "Want the guide? Tap below" with a Quick Reply works. A bare link does not.
7. The "Send as a Private Reply" box
Click the first Instagram Send Message node under the trigger. ManyChat requires "Send as a Private Reply" to be selected there, or the automation won't publish properly. That first node also has limits: one content block (text or an image, plus buttons or Quick Replies), no user input, no typing delay, no next steps.
8. The public reply, and whether the automation is live
Back in the trigger, the step after keywords is the public reply. ManyChat lets you write up to three variations and rotates them. Meta doesn't require a public reply at all; keep it because DMs to people who don't follow you tend to land in message requests, and a public "sent you a DM, check requests" tells them where to look. If DMs still deliver but the public replies have stopped, vary the wording, avoid replies that are only emojis, and remember ManyChat says it throttles replies on high-volume accounts to avoid spam flags.
Last, look at the top-right button. If it says "Set Live" or "Update", the version you're testing isn't the version that's running. A small yellow dot on the automation list means the same thing.
A 5-minute test from a second account
You need a second Instagram account you control. A personal account is fine. If the follow gate is on, use one that doesn't follow you first, then one that does.
- Minute 0. Open ManyChat's Automations tab in one window so you can watch the Runs count. On your phone, log in to the second account.
- Minute 1. Find the exact post the trigger is pointed at (check 1) and comment the keyword exactly as the caption shows it, nothing else.
- Minute 2. Watch the comment for the public reply. Then open the second account's inbox. If you follow the main account, check the primary inbox; if not, check message requests.
- Minute 3. Tap the button or send a one-word reply. The next message (email ask, link, or follow request) should arrive. If the first DM came but this one didn't, you're in check 6.
- Minute 4. Comment the keyword again from the same account. Expect nothing. That's check 5 working as designed, not a new bug.
- Minute 5. From a third account, or on a different post, try the variants: lowercase, with "!!", inside a sentence. Each account gets one shot per post, so don't burn your main tester on variants.
Then compare the Runs count with what you saw. Runs counts how often the first DM went out; Sends counts the DM with the link. A gap between them is people who got the first DM and never tapped.
Three things to change before your next post
Put the keyword in the caption exactly as it's typed in the trigger, one plain word. Point the trigger at a specific post rather than relying on "Next post". And end the first DM with a button or a question, because without that reply, Meta won't let any tool send the second message.
Those Meta rules apply to every comment-to-DM tool, DMComments included: one private reply per comment, within 7 days, and the person has to answer before a follow-up goes out. The difference is how many settings sit between you and that first DM. DMComments has one keyword per post, sends the DM within seconds with the person's name and your link, asks for their email inside the same DM, and keeps every lead in a CRM you own. It's free to start with no card, and paid plans are priced by how many Instagram accounts you connect, not by how many contacts you collect, which creators running one account tend to prefer over subscriber tiers.
Whichever tool you use, run the 5-minute test from a second account before every post you expect to do numbers. It takes less time than reading one more screenshot at 9:40 pm.
