Free ManyChat Alternative: What Each Free Tier Really Caps

A reel lands on a Tuesday night. By Wednesday morning it has 1,000 comments, most of them the word PRICE, because you told people to comment it. This is the exact moment a free comment-to-DM plan either does its job or quietly stops.

Most people looking for a free ManyChat alternative are asking one question: can I get the comment-to-DM part without paying yet? You can. But every free tier in this category caps something different: accounts, DMs a month, active contacts, keywords, or the branding stamped on the DM itself. The cap you hit first depends on how your account behaves, not on which tool has the nicest signup page.

Below: what each free tier caps as listed on the vendors' own sites in October 2026, the moment each one stops being free in practice, and a five-question check to see whether free is enough for you.

The same Meta rules sit under every tool

Before comparing caps, it helps to know what every tool, free or paid, is actually doing when someone comments your keyword. It sends a private reply to that comment through Meta's API. Meta's private replies documentation says only one message can be sent to the person who commented, it has to go within 7 days of the comment, and you can only continue the chat once that person replies, inside the 24-hour messaging window.

That shapes how the caps bite:

  • Your 1,000-comment reel is 1,000 private replies. A tool that meters DMs counts every one of them.
  • Email capture happens after the person replies, not in the first DM. Meta's messaging docs give you 24 hours to respond to each message a person sends, so "ask for the email" is a second step, and a free tier can lock it separately from the first DM.
  • Every tool needs an Instagram professional account. Meta's Instagram Platform overview says the API serves professional accounts, business or creator. A personal account can't connect any of these tools, free or paid.

No free tier gets around any of this. The differences are all in what the vendor meters.

What each free tier caps, side by side

Everything here comes from each vendor's own pricing or help page, read in October 2026. Plans change, so treat the table as a snapshot and recheck the page before you commit a launch to it.

Two things stand out. First, every free plan is one Instagram account. The second account is where free ends for every tool, every time. Second, "contacts" and "DMs" are different meters. ManyChat counts people who interact with you in the month; LinkDM, ReplyRush and InstantDM count messages sent. Someone who comments on three of your posts is one contact but three DMs.

The last row describes the paid model rather than a free cap, because that's the part that differs: the meter is connected accounts, not messages or people.

Where each one stops being free in practice

A cap on a pricing page is abstract. Here is what each one looks like on a real account, with the two numbers that matter: what it's enough for, and the moment it runs out.

ManyChat

ManyChat's own help center lists the Free plan at 25 active contacts a month, 2 channels chosen from Instagram, TikTok, Messenger or Telegram, 4 live automations, 1 user and 1 inbox seat, with a "Powered by Manychat" line on the first message to each contact. Active means anyone who interacts with you during the billing cycle, and the count resets every month.

Enough for: testing a setup, or an account where a couple of dozen people DM you a month.

Stops being free: on the first post that works. Thirty keyword comments on one post is past the cap, long before the 1,000-comment reel ever arrives. If you last looked at ManyChat's free plan a while ago, look again. The number is far lower than most comparison posts still say.

Chatfuel

Chatfuel doesn't run a free tier. Its pricing page says every plan starts with a free trial and no credit card is required, and its site describes that trial as 7 days with the first 50 conversations automated free. CRM and a shared inbox are part of every plan, so during the trial you see the real product.

Enough for: a one-week test on a post you already know gets comments.

Stops being free: on day 8, or at conversation 51. The 1,000-comment reel ends the trial the same evening it lands.

LinkDM

LinkDM's pricing page lists a free plan with 1 Instagram account, 1,000 DMs a month, unlimited linked posts and story automations, and LinkDM branding on the DM. Email capture, CRM and comment auto-reply sit on the paid tiers.

Enough for: roughly 30 keyword DMs a day on one account, if all you need to send is the link.

Stops being free: a reel with 1,000 comments uses the whole month on day one, and every comment for the rest of that month gets nothing. It also stops the first time you want the email, since that's paid.

ReplyRush

ReplyRush's pricing page lists 1,500 DMs a month on free, 1 Instagram account plus 1 Facebook account, 5 global triggers per Instagram account, and 30 days of data retention. Comment auto-reply, follow-gated DMs, branding removal, the email collector and follow-up automation are paid.

Enough for: about 50 DMs a day, with up to five keywords live across the account.

Stops being free: a 1,000-comment reel leaves 500 DMs for the other 29 days, and leads older than 30 days are gone unless you exported them.

InstantDM

InstantDM's pricing page lists 500 DM automations a month, 1 Instagram account, up to 5 post automations and 3 custom trigger words on free, with InstantDM branding on the DM. Email capture is included, and the page says no credit card is needed.

Enough for: a small account sending around 16 DMs a day that wants the email, not just the link.

Stops being free: this is the smallest cap of the group, so a 1,000-comment reel is two months of quota in one night. The 3-trigger-word cap bites the first time you want a fourth keyword.

The per-account option is in the last section, because it answers a different question: not "how much is free" but "what happens to the bill when a post takes off."

Is a free ManyChat alternative enough for you? Five questions

Answer these with real numbers from your Instagram insights, not guesses. Each question maps to one meter in the table.

  1. What did your best post do in the last 90 days? Count the keyword comments on it. If that single number is above a tool's monthly cap, free is a demo, not a plan. Above 25 rules out ManyChat's free plan on its own. Above 500 rules out InstantDM's, above 1,000 LinkDM's, above 1,500 ReplyRush's.
  2. How many accounts will send DMs? Every free tier is one Instagram account. A second brand, a client account, or a personal-plus-business split means paid from day one, so compare paid models instead: per contact, per DM, or per connected account.
  3. Do you need the email, or just the link? If the link is enough, LinkDM and ReplyRush work on free. If you want the email so you can follow up next month, those two lock it, InstantDM includes it, and ManyChat can't send email on Free at all.
  4. Can your offer carry the tool's name? Four of the five show their branding on the DM. For a free checklist nobody minds. For a coach or a local business DMing a real offer, "Powered by" a chatbot is a trust cost you should price in before you pick.
  5. How many keywords run at once? Count the posts with a live keyword this month. Three is InstantDM's free limit on trigger words, four is ManyChat's on live automations, five is ReplyRush's on global triggers. LinkDM doesn't cap linked posts on free.

If all five answers are small and steady, free is enough, and it will probably stay enough for months. If any one of them is spiky, pick the tool whose paid step is flat for your shape of growth, and read the free tool limits post for what hitting a cap looks like from inside the account.

How to start free without a card

Whichever tool you choose, the first hour looks the same. Do it in this order and you'll know within a week whether free holds.

  1. Switch to a professional account. Instagram Settings, then account type, then business or creator. Nothing connects until this is done.
  2. Pick the tool from question 1, not from a feature list. Your best post's comment count tells you which caps are real for you.
  3. Connect only the account you're testing. Keep the second account for after you've decided; it's paid everywhere anyway.
  4. Set one keyword, one DM, one public reply. The public "Sent you a DM!" reply isn't an API rule, but it tells non-followers to check their Requests folder, which is where a DM from an account they don't follow lands.
  5. Test from a second account before you post. Comment the keyword, then reply to the DM so the 24-hour window opens and you can see the email ask fire.
  6. Export your leads before you leave any free tool. Free tiers keep data on their terms; ReplyRush says 30 days. Private replies can't be re-sent to old comments after 7 days, so the export is the only copy.

DMComments is free to start with no card. If you outgrow free, the paid plans are priced by how many Instagram accounts you connect, one, three or unlimited, with unlimited DMs, contacts and automations on every paid plan, so the 1,000-comment reel and the 10-comment post cost the same. Current details are on the pricing page.

Post the reel. Watch which meter moves first. That's the number to plan around, and it's usually not the one the signup page advertised.

Questions people ask

Is there a completely free ManyChat alternative for Instagram comment-to-DM?
Yes, LinkDM, ReplyRush and InstantDM all list a free plan, and DMComments is free to start with no card. Each one caps something different, from 500 to 1,500 DMs a month, one Instagram account, a handful of keywords, and the vendor's branding on the DM. Free works until a single post out-earns the monthly cap, which can happen in one evening.
Does ManyChat still have a free plan?
It does, but ManyChat's help center now lists it at 25 active contacts a month, 2 channels, 4 live automations and 1 user, with a Powered by Manychat line on the first message. That is small enough that one post with 30 keyword comments is already past it. Treat it as a way to test the builder, not as a plan to run comment-to-DM on.
Which free comment-to-DM tool lets me collect emails without paying?
Of the free plans compared here, InstantDM lists email capture as included on its free plan. LinkDM and ReplyRush both keep email capture on paid tiers, and ManyChat's Free plan does not include the email channel. Remember the ask happens after the person replies to your first DM, inside Meta's 24-hour messaging window.
Do I need a business account to use a free comment-to-DM tool?
You need an Instagram professional account, which can be either a business or a creator account. Meta's Instagram Platform documentation says the API serves professional accounts only, so a personal account cannot connect any of these tools, free or paid. Switching takes a minute in Instagram settings and is reversible.
What happens to my leads if I leave a free tool or hit its cap?
Export them first, because free tiers keep data on their own terms; ReplyRush, for example, lists 30 days of retention on free. Meta allows one private reply per comment within 7 days, so you cannot go back and re-DM old commenters from a new tool. Whatever you exported is the only copy of those leads you will have.
